2013 week 32 Wednesday: Zugspitze – the highest mountain in Germany!
On our way up to the Alpspitze cable car |
Wednesday was a big mountain climbing day. We started our day with going to the local grocery store and buy some food for lunch, as our lunch stop would be at the top of a mountain so it would be quite expensive to buy food there. Most of us bought some krakers and stuff to eat – we also brought lots of water as we would be hicking in the heat most of the day. Our bus drove us to the bottom of the mountain were we had to hike a bit to get to the cable car that would bring us most of the way up to the top of the Alpspitze mountain. Some of us chose to walk all the way from the cable car, but most took the next cable car up. I was on the hiking team, even though I was in Kawasaki shoes (which is definitely not hiking shoes). But we got there in one piece. The view from the top was incredible – you could look down on Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we came from, and all the houses look tiny.

Waiting for the cable car |
After spending some time at the top of the Alpspitze, and getting/eating our lunches, we took the cable car down again to take the next one to the very top of the highest mountain in Germany – the Zugspitze. Unfortunately we came down at an unfortunate time, so we had to wait around an hour for the next cable car. Some people went and got some beer to kill time (in Germany beer is basically the same as food so they don’t really feel the same need I do to eat something before drinking, but we also just got lunch so..). When the cable car finally got there it took us all the way to the top of the Zugspitze. It was incredebly cold at the top, so, for the first time that day, I was happy I had brought my leather jacket and a skarf

It’s chilly at the top! |
We spent som etime at the top of the Zugspitze (but not too much as it was crazy cold), and then we were herded back into a cable car to take us back down. We made a stop at the Eibsee which is a lake at the Zugspitze, where some went swimming and the rest of us just chilled for a while. I went back to the hotel with the early team, and the ones who went swimming stayed longer. The lake was really clear, you could basically see the bottom even after going out a bit.
In the evening we went to a bar with the teachers. We were onlyaround 5 or 6 student, so not all went with us. I hadn’t gotten any dinner so I was crazy hungry went we left at, like, 9 o’clock, so Herr Spittank got me some nuts he had laying in his room, which was definitely not enough to go drinking on. So after some beer the teachers bought some Abendbrot (evening bread) which is basically bread and cheese (so not enough in my opinion), so I got kinda drunk, fast. But I don’t think the others had gotten that much either, so we were on the same level 🙂 . On the table next to us in the bar (we sat outside, as it was hot enough) sat some men dressed in traditional German clothes with fluffy hats, so Molly and Saskia went and got pictures with them (after gathering courage for most of the night) and when they tried to touch their hats they refused them!. Sadly I don’t have any pictures of them together, but it was so funny 🙂 .
